Google pops up in London

Evening Standard.

The 285 square-foot pop-up 'shop within a shop', which only sells Google's Chromebook laptop and a few accessories such as headphones, will be open for three months up to Christmas.

According to GMA News, the company's research had shown that 80% of laptop sales are through shops.

“It is our first foray into physical retail. This is a new channel for us, and it's still very, very early days. It's something Google is going to play with and see where it leads,” says Arvind Desikan, head of consumer marketing at Google UK.

The store is intended to be a trial shop for Google, in which it hopes to test a new method of marketing and selling its own Chromebook laptops, notes CMV Live.

The Chromebook laptops use Google's operating system, and are almost completely cloud-based, relying on Internet connectivity to work well.

The opening of the shop was what would best be described as a soft launch, with Google at pains to point out that the opening was an experiment, and that future openings would follow if the format is successful.
