With few exceptions, Google`s new Desktop Search, released in mid-October, has been greeted with enthusiasm, including a Redmond-based Windows evangelist attending Microsoft`s TechEd developer forum at Sun City.
Vic Gundotra, Microsoft platform strategy GM, says the Google Desktop Search demonstrates three things: the openness of the Windows platform, the power of rich client software and the positive effect of competition.
"The openness of Windows is demonstrated by the fact that it allows the likes of Google to compete against core functionality like the Windows 'search` function and outdo Microsoft," says Gundotra. "The simple truth is that Google Desktop Search provides better search capability than Windows."
Gundotra says Google`s success demonstrates the healthy competitive nature of the commercial software industry. "People sometimes have the mistaken view that there is no competition against Microsoft, but that is untrue, and Google has proven that."
However, he adds: "Microsoft is at its best when there is good, healthy competition."
