Research results and predictions
* Worldwide server shipments grew 4% in Q2, although revenue declined 3.8% with IBM regaining the number one slot from HP, according to Gartner. Dell, Oracle and Cisco took the number three, four and five positions.
* Worldwide PC shipments are expected to fall 9.7% this year to 315.4 million units; although by 2017, the number is expected to grow marginally to 319.8 million units, with almost all the growth coming from emerging markets, ie, mature markets will shrink further in the period 2013 to 2017, according to IDC.
* Global mobile data traffic doubled during the 12 months that ended 30 June; and smartphones made up 55% of all mobile handsets sold in Q2 compared to 50% in Q1 and 40% in the full-year 2012, according to Ericsson.
