Google to kill Gizmo5 VOIP

The Register.

This comes 16 months after the company acquired the start-up. A Google spokesman states: "In an effort to focus our resources on core Google Voice innovations, we will be discontinuing the Gizmo5 service in early April.”

Fierce VOIP says since the acquisition, Google has integrated Gizmo5's VOIP functionality into its Gmail system allowing customers to make VOIP calls right from their inbox.

According to Mashable, Google has enhanced its voice calling feature in Gmail with users given the ability to click on phone numbers and call them instantly instead of having to type in the number manually. From now on, phone numbers in Gmail will appear as links.

Google confirmed it will roll out a Google Voice client for Honeycomb tablets, says Mobile Burn.

While many Honeycomb tablets will likely lack a phone for making calls, Google Voice can be useful for sending and receiving SMS messages and managing voicemails.
