Google to limit free news access
Newspaper publishers will now be able to set a limit on the number of free news articles people can read through Google, reports the BBC.
The concession follows claims from some media companies that the search engine is profiting from online news pages.
Under the First Click Free programme, publishers can now prevent unrestricted access to subscription Web sites. Users who click on more than five articles in a day may be routed to payment or registration pages.
India blocks millions of mobiles
India has blocked service to an estimated 25 million mobile phones lacking valid identity codes over concerns criminal or militant groups could use them to organise attacks, reports The Register.
Mobile phones with a blank or all-zero International Mobile Identity (IMEI) code went dead at midnight on Tuesday as a result of a government security directive that became law in October 2008.
The 15-digit IMEI number can be used to identify a handset on an operator's network, allowing individual calls to be traced to the phone it came from. Phones without a valid IMEI are usually inexpensive, unbranded handsets manufactured in China.
Hacker extradition decision defended
The home secretary has defended his decision to allow the extradition of computer hacker Gary McKinnon amid criticism from some MPs, says the BBC.
Glasgow-born McKinnon, 43, who has Asperger's Syndrome, is accused of breaking into US military computers.
He says he was seeking UFOs, and is fighting a US trial on medical grounds.
Facebook, MySpace delete NY offenders
New York attorney-general Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday that more than 3 500 sex offenders from his state have been purged from Facebook and MySpace, states CNet.
Both companies have long had policies against registered sex offenders using their services, but the implementation of New York's new Electronic Securing and Targeting of Online Predators Act has made it easier for the sites to identify perpetrators from the Empire State.
Facebook, according to Cuomo, was able to identify and disable the accounts of 2 782 registered sex offenders. MySpace deleted 1 796 accounts.
