Govt funds needed for ICT education

The government needs to invest a further R4.89 million to provide mathematics and science schools with computer labs. This is in addition to the R1.5 million and R1.3 million already invested in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

This is according to Department of curriculum director Trudi van Wyk, speaking on behalf of the deputy minister of education, Enver Surty, at the Education to Careers forum at Tshwane University of Technology last week.

Van Wyk said it is the government`s plan that by 2013 every child in SA should be ICT-capable. In line with this aim, 40% of schools already have access to computers, she noted.

"The challenge still remains to have computers for teaching and learning. Furthermore, the government struggles to determine the correct picture of ICT in education, because of the number of initiatives that are taking place outside the knowledge of provincial departments of education," said Van Wyk.

"This does set back government`s plan to improve education development."
