South Africa's most innovative public sector ICT projects and stakeholders will be recognised at the inaugural ICT Public Service Awards at GovTech 2015, in Durban, later this month.

Aiming to recognise innovators and inspire others to harness ICTs which have the potential to impact public service positively and help improve service delivery, the first ICT Public Service Awards, which are targeted at both private and public sector nominees, will be presented at a gala dinner at the 10th annual GovTech, in Durban, on 25 October.

Nominations for the awards will be accepted until 15 October.

"Our ICT Public Service Awards will recognise leadership and excellence in IT operations, and the transformation of government through effective technology use," says Dr Setumo Mohapi, CEO of the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), which hosts GovTech and sponsors the ICT Public Service Awards.

Awards will be presented for outstanding ICT achievement in seven categories:

ICT Service Delivery and Transformation Award National Government - to recognise and reward the most outstanding service delivery, or a product or service, and/or transformation at a national government level.

ICT Service Delivery and Transformation Award Provincial Government - to recognise and reward the most outstanding service delivery of a product or service, and/or transformation at a provincial government level.

ICT Service Delivery and Transformation Award Local Government - to recognise and reward the most outstanding service delivery or a product or service, and/or transformation at a local government level.

ICT Provider Innovation and Service Transformation Award Start-Ups and SMMEs up to R10 million - this award recognises a start-up or SMME with a turnover of no more than R10 million per annum, which has improved service delivery to citizens.

ICT Innovation and Service Transformation Award Companies > R10 million - this award recognises a company with a turnover greater than R10 million per annum, which has improved service delivery to citizens.

Women in ICT Award - to recognise and reward an outstanding contribution made by a woman to the ICT industry and to professional development within it.

Youth in ICT Award - to recognise and reward outstanding contribution to the ICT industry by a young professional under the age of 35.

"When we select our winners, we shall be looking at their innovative contributions, their impact on our citizens and society in general, and any public-service transformation," says Dr Mohapi. "This is part of our efforts to raise the benchmark in the ICT sector and we shall be recognising and rewarding products and solutions of all sizes."

The awards build on several other key SITA projects, including the Software Development Challenge, the Youth Development Programme and TechnoGirl. Dr Mohapi looks forward to the awards promoting successfully applied projects and solutions that contribute to improved service delivery.
