GPRS is still a major force in commercial applications and it will still be some time before newer technologies take over, says Datalinx Technologies business manager Wayne Berkinshaw.

Recent media reports have referred to emerging wireless technologies such as and WiMAX that could bring wireless broadband connectivity at far reduced prices.

However, Berkinshaw says it will take some time before these technologies replace GPRS for run of the mill commercial applications.

"GPRS has not been fully exploited yet. Most of the country is covered by the cellular networks, its use is relatively cheap and dependable and it has been enhanced through the introduction of GPRS+ and Edge technologies," he says.

"We are now supplying GPRS technology to two companies, Cash Axcess (part of US multinational Global Axcess) and ATM Solutions, who are able to put automated teller machines into rural areas where there is very little infrastructure because all they need is an electricity plug," he says.
