TheRegister reports that the Greek government`s ban on gaming has been overturned by a court decision. The ruling was made during a trial of two Net caf'e owners who were charged with allowing their customers to play Counterstrike and online chess on their premises.
GamesIndustry.biz reports that the shop owners faced a possible three-month jail sentence and fines of about 5 000 euros as well as losing their business licences. The ruling was welcomed by the Greek Internet Caf'e Owners Union and the 300-strong crowd which had gathered outside the court to protest against the law. [More at TheRegister]
PHP outstrips ASP
PHP, the open source Internet scripting language, is now officially the most widely used scripting tool on the Internet, according to recent figures released by Netcraft. More than two million copies of PHP were downloaded in the last year, exceeding Microsoft`s ASP scripting language.
Netcraft says PHP is now growing at a rate of 15% a month and is used on as many as three million active Web sites. The growth in PHP could well be attributed the continued growth of the Apache Web server, another open source project, but the growth also indicates that more non-open source users are switching to the cross-platform PHP.
