Grid goes mobile

Oracle has released the latest version of its Database Lite product that enables the development and deployment of database applications for mobile environments based on Oracle`s Grid Computing infrastructure.

Oracle says Database Lite 10g enables central management via Web browser. It also allows for "persistent access" to critical information and applications without requiring continuous connectivity to back-end enterprise systems. This means users can continue working even while in areas where coverage is unavailable, unreliable or unsecured.

"Mobile technologies are no longer simply the domain of the sales force, and field workers have been adopted by industries such as defence, national health and public safety," says Jacob Christfort, Oracle CTO.

"Companies are constantly looking for new ways of gaining competitive advantage and reducing costs by streamlining their business processes."

Christfort says organisations ranging from traditional sales force automation to governments can take advantage of Database Lite 10g`s advanced management, security, synchronisation and development features for mobile applications. The development environment includes support for Java and .Net development tools as well as several programming languages.

Oracle SA says Database Lite 10g is available immediately for all major operating systems including Linux, Unix and Windows.
