Grintek appointed official technology partner for Cape Argus/Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour

Johannesburg, 14 Mar 2005

Cyclists with pounding hearts and aching muscles in this year's Cape Argus/Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour can summon quick help from emergency services thanks to a highly sophisticated call centre supplied by Grintek.

Emergency vehicles with satellite tracking will be situated at various places along the route, so that the call centre can direct the nearest vehicle to any emergency.

Thanks to Nortel's PABX with 50 extensions, frustrated motorists caught up in traffic jams will also be redirected in quick time. Race marshals will be able to inform the call centre about traffic jams, accidents and anything else that could disturb cyclists.

Grintek has been appointed one of the official technology partners for the Cape Argus/Pick n Pay Cycle Tour and is supplying the Venue Operations Centre (VOC) with its core equipment.

The VOC, which is situated at Greenpoint stadium, the control centre of the tour, will allow cyclists to find out registration details before, and on the day of the race.

Says Denzil Ulyate, procurement manager for the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, owners of the race: "We are really concerned about the welfare of participating cyclists and of motorists. Grintek's hi-tech call centre will ensure a slick event."

Says Majid Mowzer, regional manager at Grintek Cape office: "This equipment could be a lifesaver. It will certainly be a hassle-saver. The Cycle Tour will use the latest and most technologically advanced equipment for this event."

In addition to the PABX, Grintek provided a computer telephony server, including Nortel Symposium call centre server, and telephone management software and server. A wallboard and wallboard server were included to provide a display for call centre applications.

Grintek will also have two engineers on site for support and maintenance.

The calls to the call centre will be recorded, time-stamped and allocated an identification number, which is logged onto a database. This will help a caller to re-establish contact with the call centre if his or her call is disconnected. It will also enable verification of information communicated.
