Grintek has high hopes for call centre industry

Rasool opens new Grintek offices in Cape Town
Johannesburg, 01 Nov 2004

The Premier of the Western Cape, Ebrahim Rasool, today opened the new offices of Grintek in the Cape Town city centre.

Rasool said the decision to relocate the office to the centre of town is a vote of confidence in the future of the provincial capital. He paid tribute to the Grintek Group for its pioneering role in the field of black economic empowerment and for its reputation as a provider of turnkey solutions in the fields of technology, energy management, telecommunications and defence.

Gavin Swanepoel, chief operating officer of the Grintek Technologies division, said the group is committed to the future of the Western Cape as a growing economic force in the country and to the Cape Town city centre as a vibrant and exciting new hub for business development.

"One of the primary areas that we have targeted for future growth is the high technology sector, and in particular the call centre and business process outsourcing industries," said Rasool, referring to the Western Cape government's strategy to attract new investment into the province.

Cape Town is leading the international trend in attracting new investments into this important service sector. Rasool has recently returned from an investment mission to the UK and Holland where there is considerable interest in the benefits that the region can bring to the expansion of the industry.

In the past year the call centre industry has created at least 1 000 new sustainable jobs in the Western Cape and the expectations are that this number will be multiplied in the coming months. Already there are more than 80 companies operating over 100 call centres in the province, providing direct employment to more than 11 000 people.

"I have no doubt that Grintek will play a significant role in the expansion of this sector," said the Premier.

Swanepoel said Cape Town has become a major player in the Call centre industry. He referred to a recent study commissioned by the investment agency, "Calling the Cape", that indicates a considerable global interest in Cape Town as a competitive alternative in this field. It highlights the advantages offered by the city, namely high service quality, a stable workforce and a robust skills base. Equally important within the survey is the positive feedback on customer satisfaction from those companies that have already located their business in the Mother City.

"Grintek wants to be a major player in this market. We are confident that we can provide the skills, products, commitment and enthusiasm to make a contribution to economic development and to partner the public sector in ongoing efforts to create jobs and combat poverty," said Swanepoel.

The new premises of Grintek Technologies are located at third floor, Rosebank College House, 5 Waterkant Mall, Cape Town.
