Grintek secures ParaGea agency

Johannesburg, 26 Mar 2001

Grintek Telecom has been appointed distributor for ParaGea Communications, a market leader in VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) technology.

Says Gustav Engelbrecht, manager satellite business, satellite and at Grintek Telecom, "ParaGea is an acknowledged leader in the field of satellite communication products. Originally a part of COMSAT specialising in compression technology, now widely utilised by its competitors, the company brings a number of innovative systems to the satellite communication market backed by almost 20 years of experience. ParaGea's products fit neatly into Grintek's service basket, enabling us to enhance the range of solutions we can offer the communications industry."

ParaGea products include the TerraVoice VSAT system for high volume voice communications. It features a compression ratio of up to 20:1 compared to the 8:1 achieved by conventional systems, ensuring a high level of efficiency. TerraSat II is a high-performance voice/fax/data communications solution for remote areas lacking a conventional land-based PSTN infrastructure. Says Engelbrecht, "TerraSat II has great potential for Africa as a whole, particularly telecom operators looking to implement effective rural telephony systems. With four voice lines and complete scalability, TerraSat II offers lower costs for upgrades. In addition, a data stream of up to 128kbps offers potential for applications such as Internet access, distance learning and more."

"For industries requiring low to medium interactive data transmission, the SCADAStar offers interactive and batch communications up to 64kbps for SCADA systems under even the most extreme environmental conditions. Applications that can benefit from the SCADA Star include pipeline monitoring, water level monitoring and flood control and mining. The largest project involving SCADAStar is in Korea where the system is used to control five dams in a flood area. More than 200 SCADA Star terminals, are installed to provide round-the-clock monitoring of water levels."

ParaGea systems have also been successfully deployed in South Africa. For example, its systems are utilised in the marine diamond mining industry.

Using asymmetrical carriers, the client communicates with multiple mining vessels at up to 160kbps with fully integrated voice & data networks. The ships communicate with the Cape Town-based headquarters at typical speeds of 384kbps carrying live video, voice and data. The system allows the company to monitor the entire mining operation in addition to providing full access to ERP systems on the vessels. ParaGea systems are also used by the defence and telecommunications industries.

Adds Engelbrecht, "With the growth of the telecommunications industry in Africa, particularly in the field of GSM cellular networks, satellite communications is set to experience rapid growth. Grintek Telecom is well positioned to bring integrated, high-performance satellite communication solutions to the continent."
