Grintek Telecom has secured a R1.8 million contract for the supply and installation of Tellabs voice quality enhancement equipment (VQE) to Mauritius Telecom for use on the South Africa - Far East (SAFE) undersea cable landing in Mauritius.
SAFE is a joint venture among a number of telecom operators including Telkom SA, Telecom Malaysia, Mauritius Telecom, France Telecom and VSNL (India). It provides a reliable, direct and high volume telecommunications gateway to most Southern African countries and extends from Cape Town all the way to Malaysia.
Says Gerard Rebelo, sales and marketing manager, Tellabs, at Grintek Telecom: "We will supply Tellabs' Verity VQE solution for integration into Mauritius Telecom's new exchange installed at its SAFE termination. The Verity system provides high-end hybrid echo cancelling caused by electrical coupling at 2-wire to 4-wire conversion points to ensure that the network operator can offer its users the highest quality service. In addition, voice quality enhancement such as Tellabs Level Control ensure clarity by automatically compensating for audio levels on a call-by-call basis.
"Grintek is the authorised Tellabs partner in Southern Africa and, while we have supplied telecom operators in SA, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia with the Tellabs MartisDXX managed access and transport network system, this is the first time we have supplied Verity VQE systems to this region. As a solution, it offers the client not only the means to ensure quality of service but also the ability to expand easily and rapidly as its needs change."
Adds Rebelo: "Grintek will provide both installation and ongoing support for the project which is due for completion by the end of November 2001. This project could lead to other business opportunities for us in Mauritius as Grintek Telecom offers a wide spectrum of telecommunication solutions."
