Grintek Telecom helps Telkom SA expand wireless broadband network

Telkom expands and upgrades 1.9GHz voice services in suburban and rural areas
Johannesburg, 03 Nov 2004

Grintek Telecom, one of SA's leading empowerment ICT (information and communications technology) solutions and integration companies, has been given a further order from Telkom for Alvarion MultiGain Wireless (MGW) equipment to complete a countrywide, wireless network infrastructure project initiated in 2003. Alvarion is a worldwide leader in wireless broadband providing systems to carriers, ISPs and private network operators.

The equipment will be used to deploy 11 network expansion and upgrade projects. Grintek Telecom, which will supply state-of-the-art equipment, is responsible for supply, installation and local support.

The MultiGain Wireless (MGW) uses radio links instead of copper lines to quickly deploy quality voice, high-speed Voice Band Data (VBD) and ISDN-BRI services to residential or SOHO customers. "The MGW is well suited for both new operators entering the market or incumbents where copper infrastructure is already saturated or is difficult to install, for instance in new housing areas, historical sites or temporary installations," says Srini Moodley, business development at Grintek Telecom.

"The MGW platform is ideal for an operator like Telkom," says Moodley. "As a wireless system, it is quick and cost-effective to install, both at the base station and user side, and can reach regions where fixed-lines have been prohibitively expensive to deploy."
