Hewlett-Packard (HP) has reported strong growth in sales of its Ethernet networking products over the past year, outpacing the growth of the market as a whole.
According to recent research from the Dell`Oro Group and International Data Corporation (IDC), HP has emerged as one of the world`s fastest-growing networking vendors with double-digit growth across key geographies and technology segments.
According to the Dell`Oro Group, the global market share for HP Procurve networking products grew at over three times the market-wide growth rate from the year 2000 to 2001 in the total Ethernet switching market. HP reported growth of 31% growth versus industry growth of just 9%.
The Dell`Oro Group reports show that HP Procurve grew 21% in total Ethernet switching from the fourth quarter of 2000 to the fourth quarter of 2001 despite an industry decline of 14% during that period.
HP also led the market in gigabit growth and moved into the number two position in the Layer-2 gigabit market, with 146% growth versus industry growth of 37% from the year 2000 to 2001.
IDC reports that HP`s LAN shipments in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region leapt by 26.6% in the fourth quarter of 2001, compared to market growth of 19%.
Says Louis Helmbold, Volume Product Manager at HP SA: "The market share numbers clearly indicate that customers are beginning to appreciate the value that HP Procurve products represent. HP is offering what customers are looking for: solid, feature-rich equipment at an affordable price point."
Helmbold reports that HP in South Africa is also enjoying strong networking sales, particularly in the high-end of the switching market where sales of between R900 000 and R3 million are common. HP SA is steadily making in-roads into a market that was traditionally dominated by Cisco.
"This growth is fuelled by our price-competitiveness and adherence to industry standards, coupled with a growing recognition in the market of HP`s strengths as a high-end networking player," says Helmbold.
Helmbold says HP SA will soon launch new high-end Layer-3 switches to round off its product portfolio. These products will consolidate HP`s position in SA`s networking market, he adds.
