GuruHut targets business analysts

Johannesburg, 18 May 2004

GuruHut is a market leader in training business analyst skills to IT professionals. With over 2 000 professionals trained in writing use cases and other business analysts tasks.

GuruHut`s Business Analyst Series is a series of interactive workshops designed to get the maximum out of your business analysts. It arms them with critical, up-to-date, business analysis skills, making them more effective and agile. The number one cause of IT project failures is poor management and capture of system requirements. This makes these skills particularly vital in any business today.

The Business Analyst Series is designed to make business analysts (BAs) and other IT professionals more effective. Although the courses in the series can be taken individually, GuruHut has structured package deals which make the series as a whole extremely attractive.

The first module in the series, places the role of the BA in the context of modern, agile development approaches. It covers current best practices, roles, activities and measurement, setting the context for the balance of the series.

Next in line is "Requirements Management with Use Cases". This is delivered as a highly interactive co-operative workshop in which groups of candidates participate in writing use cases and work through the process of capturing requirements. The course is loosely based on work by Alistair Cockburn and other specialists in the domain and is GuruHut`s most established course.

Understanding the business processes in which the systems live and work is a critical part of a business analyst`s job. GuruHut`s highly pragmatic "Business Process Modelling for Software Development" provides delegates with a very practical, lightweight approach to capturing and understanding business processes. Modelling is done using UML where appropriate.

Of course, it ain`t over till the fat lady sings, or in the case of software development, until the testing is done. "Use Case Driven Functional Testing" is next in the series. This workshop shows how requirements can be traced from use cases, through development and into testing where they are used to drive out the test cases. Also explored during the workshop are the different types of testing, setting up and establishing a test environment and automating functional testing.

Where does the BA fit in the overall process, and how can they maximise their role? This is the topic explored by the next workshop in the series, entitled "The BA`s Role in the SDLC: Putting is all together".

In an ideal world, the roles of project manager and business analyst are distinct; sadly, reality dictates that we often find the BA managing projects as well as requirements. "Software Project Management Strategies" offers rare insight into the challenges of managing software projects.

Software projects are effectively about the people who produce the software. Having tools to recognise and identify potential problems early can make the difference between success and failure. Add to this, specific strategies or recipes for dealing with specific situations and you have a powerful set of tools for ensuring the successful delivery of your projects.

Finally, recognising the harsh realities of the BA`s life in SA, GuruHut has added a two-day, intensive hands-on workshop on SQL and Relational databases. This workshop is designed to help BAs manage the practical data related aspects of their jobs, including validating tests, fixing data and preparing data for tests.

All in all, GuruHut`s BA Series covers the core skills demanded of BAs in an extremely practical and pragmatic way. For further information on this or other training from GuruHut, contact 086 100 Guru (086 100 4878) or www.guruhut.com.
