Application service provider Health ASP South Africa has signed a R2 million three-year contract with IBM to upgrade its IT infrastructure. The deal will provide the ASP with hardware, networking and services.

Health ASP offers access to applications on a fee-for-use basis. The GlobalHealth Solutions package includes implementation, operations and ongoing maintenance to give healthcare stakeholders financial and clinical tools to manage their business.

IBM SA hosts Health ASP`s six servers in the IBM SA centre in Johannesburg, providing AIX and NT platforms for Health ASP`s applications. Health ASP maintains its own software on the servers.

Health ASP uses IBM`s Midrange Express offering, which provides affordable day-to-day support. The service includes systems monitoring, helpdesk support and problem determination and analysis. Optional services include batch job management and maintenance, disaster recovery services, system software upgrades and database administration.

"An effective system should improve the delivery and quality of healthcare," says Health ASP GM Johann Maritz. "In doing so, it reduces costs."
