With regards to the latest online banking scam, Standard Bank stated that malicious activity had originated from a defrauded customer`s workplace, advising customers to make sure they have a personal firewall and anti-virus installed.
Administrators who rely on anti-virus software and firewall only to block spyware infections may be in for a rude awakening, as a recent study conducted by Equation Research found that 82% of the respondents noted that, despite these precautions, their desktops were still infected with spyware.
Each day unwanted programs enter corporate networks, adversely impacting productivity, decreasing bandwidth and compromising network security. Spyware can piggyback on what appear to be legitimate download files. Once downloaded, the spyware software installs surreptitiously, without the user`s consent, monitoring the user`s activities and sending the collected data to remote locations. Since spyware often works together with Trojans, infected systems face severe risk of sensitive information being transmitted from their system.
