Interoperability of ATM Flow Control Proven @Story = An important advance in the adoption of ATM technology has been claimed jointly by Olicom and Rockwell Semiconductor Systems with the first "real-world" demonstration of ATM traffic management interoperability. The demonstration was set up to prove the interoperability of legacy ATM management systems with modern ATM switching devices running the latest traffic management specifications from the ATM Forum. "The success of the demonstration creates a significant incentive for users to deploy ATM across the enterprise network," says Olicom Africa country manager, Nick Muller. He says it also confirms the interoperability of ATM devices running ABR (Available Bit Rate) Explicit Rate, the latest and most advanced traffic management specification from the ATM Forum, with those running the legacy method of flow control, called EFCI (Explicit Forward Congestion Indication). "ABR Explicit Rate has been designed to handle the specific characteristics of legacy LAN traffic, and is seen as a critical capability for the effective integration of ATM into traditional Ethernet and Token Ring networks," says Appunn. "Proving the interoperability of ATM equipment from different vendors using dissimilar methods of flow control is an important step forward in building the confidence of network managers and IT decision makers considering ATM as a backbone or even a desktop technology," he adds.
