Madge Networks, a worldwide supplier of data, video and voice networking solutions, in conjunction with The Silicon Valley Networking Lab (SVNL) has demonstrated that High Speed Token Ring (HSTR) is superior in performance when compared to Fast Ethernet. In a series of tests, replicating "real life" applications, HSTR performed up to 60 per cent faster than Fast Ethernet when handling multiple clients, averaging a performance gain of 24 per cent.
The tests carried out by SVNL also demonstrate the throughput and server CPU benefits of Token Ring because of its inherent support for Jumbo Frames. Using 4.5 Kbytes frames, the tests illustrate that HSTR liberates up to 30 per cent more of the server CPU capacity, requiring much less processing than Fast Ethernet which is beneficial both to network processors and servers. In addition, the report shows that HSTR provides a trouble-free upgrade path for existing Token Ring networks.

SVNL performed a number of application tests, including server-to-server backup, multiple clients-to-server data transfers, and tests with simultaneous client-to-server and server-to-server traffic. Server connections were operated at 100 Mbps HSTR and client workstations at switched 16 Mbps Token Ring. This was compared to the Ethernet solution, which used 100 Mbps Switched Fast Ethernet for both server and client connections, employing the highest performing solutions currently on the market. In one of these "real-life" tests, the 16 Mbps Token Ring clients delivered more throughput than the Fast Ethernet clients showing the efficiency benefits of Token Ring.
