Hitachi Information Forum: Big data 'challenges compliance'

Hitachi Data Systems set to shed light on managing the new compliance headache at upcoming Hitachi Information Forum.

Johannesburg, 04 Nov 2014

Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi (TSE: 6501), believes the exponential growth in the amount of data in circulation is challenging sub-Saharan African organisations' efforts to remain compliant.

Speaking ahead of the Hitachi Information Forum 2014 in South Africa this week, Cleo Becker, regional counsel for HDS Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, Turkey and Israel, says organisations are struggling to get a grip on data compliance.

"IDC's statistics point towards a rapid rise in business data, which is on a trajectory to grow at 40% to 50% year on year. Therefore, the volume of data that businesses need to store, manage and report on is becoming more difficult to administer. In addition, the types of data that need to be captured are increasingly complex, including instant messaging (IM), text, voice and social media interactions - so-called 'unstructured data' - and many businesses do not have sophisticated enough technology, tools and policies in place to manage this," she says.

With potentially thousands of pieces of legislation impacting companies, peaking at over 100 000 legal requirements relevant to multinational companies, the regulation landscape is constantly evolving and varies across markets, says Becker.

Becker will address the Hitachi Information Forum at The Forum in Bryanston, South Africa on 7 November, on ways to achieve compliance in an increasingly complex environment.

International Hitachi executives, including Bob Plumridge, chief technology officer EMEA, Hitachi Data Systems, executives from Hitachi partner companies and world-renowned solo adventurer Riaan Manser, will also give businesses new insights into innovation and breaking new ground.

IT executives, storage professionals and business managers will discover Hitachi's holistic perspective on big data, the changing face of IT infrastructure, and how to build the on-demand data centre, with real-world case studies to illustrate how companies are innovating with information.

Present at this year's forum are sponsors including Brocade, ETS, Cathexis, Commvault, Hitachi, Symantec, ITgility, Virtual Instruments and Intel.
