Local affiliate of Aladdin Knowledge Systems, eSafe Technologies SA, has announced the release of the beta version of its content protection software, eSafe Desktop 3.0. This product is available free of charge to all home users at www.esafe.co.za.
"By offering this free download via the Net we want to encourage the Internet community to adopt proactive content security standards. This product ensures protection against viruses, vandals, inappropriate content, data exposure and resource misuse," says Brett Myroff, CEO of eSafe Technologies SA.
When comparing version 3.0 to its forerunner eSafe Desktop 2.2, there are two features that are highlighted: the application firewall and the system protection. The application firewall monitors any desktop application that attempts to access the Internet, and requests authorisation for each application.
"This feature prevents spying software such as Trojans and backdoors from accessing your PC via the Internet, resulting in the Trojans being useless to hackers," adds Myroff.
The system protection constantly monitors suspicious behaviour, usually associated with malicious code. These applications might be vandals, which can steal or corrupt information using various techniques such as manipulating Windows shares, modifying Windows start up files and folders, or the Windows registry.
Says Myroff: "Anti-virus software is old news, content protection is the only true solution and it does not cost users an arm and a leg."
Referring to eSafe Desktop 3.0`s sandbox module, Myroff says that it prevents hostile behaviour before it is able to execute. The eSafe solution against vandals is to verify access of each application to system resources against a predefined and limited access control list. "This way, all active content is controlled, including Java, ActiveX, scripts, plug-ins, HTML and Trojan Horses," he says.
Myroff adds that it is advisable to remove any other anti-virus or personal firewall software already installed on a system, before installing eSafe. "Should you encounter any problems with the beta programme, you can contact the beta program support team via our local eSafe Web site at www.esafe.co.za."
