There is a huge probability that if you own a home machine with ADSL, that it has been compromised and turned into a zombie, delegates heard at the SA IT Security road show, in Sandton yesterday.
The latest Symantec Threat Report reveals a direct correlation between broadband uptake and the amount of compromised machines or "bots".
This trend is worldwide, but SA has lately come under the radar due to large-scale broadband penetration as a result of the deregulation of its telecoms market, said Patrick Evans, regional director of the African region at Symantec.
"Home users are the weakest link," he said. "If you have ADSL at home, you are infected. That's the probability."
The report also showed that although Internet Explorer is the most targeted operating browser, there is a great increase in Mozilla Firefox attacks.
Now in its 10th edition, the full Symantec report will be published on the company's Web site next week.
