HP brings latest POS offering to SA

Johannesburg, 09 Jul 2012

HP is set to commence shipping of its latest solution - the HP RP 7 - into SA, beginning next month.

This was revealed by Gwen Coble, product manager for solutions in the HP Printing and Personal Systems Group, EMEA region, in an interview with ITWeb last week.

This 15-inch point-of-sale (POS) touch-screen display, which boasts a Web cam, fingerprint scanner and card reader attachments, was unveiled at the HP Global Influencer Summit, in May.

According to Coble, SA, as one of HP's biggest markets, will get the product together with the major markets worldwide.

“We are currently in the process of doing customer evaluations in SA before we start shipping the product.”

“Consumers now have vast amounts of knowledge on what they need, rather than previously when retailers determined customer needs.”

She also explained that the POS machine, which HP dubs the next-generation all-in-one retail solution, can be used on a counter or mounted on a wall, thanks to a dual-hinge base that supports it.

Coble noted that one of the biggest advantages of the HP RP 7 is that it can also be used as a self-service kiosk. It is also energy-efficient.

The HP RP 7 is built to handle the rigorous demands of retail environments and includes a 15- or 17-inch diagonal touch-enabled display that is sealed to provide resistance against environmental contaminants, such as water and dust, Coble adds.

“Retailers can add an optional magnetic-stripe reader, biometric fingerprint reader or Web cam, and either a two-line or 10-inch diagonal customer display to enhance promotional activities.”

The machine comes preloaded with quad-core, second-generation Intel Core processors with Intel vPro technology. According to Coble, this enables the HP RP 7 to deliver hardware-based remote management technologies.

It also includes 2.3 DDR3 RAM technology, which Coble said helps ensure fast application loading and toggling between screens.

HP claims the product has a five-year lifespan and backs this up by bundling a support contract for the same period with the machine. Pricing is yet to be confirmed.
