HP CEO makes BWA finals

Johannesburg, 10 Jul 2007

The Businesswomen's Association (BWA) SA has announced the finalists for the 2007 Businesswoman of the Year Award, with HP CEO Thoko Mokgosi-Mwantembe nominated in the corporate business category.

Nominations were called for in April and finalists were selected by the BWA, together with independent adjudicators.

The four other finalists are Ingrid Davis, director of pharmacy and procurement at Netcare (corporate category); Ntombizine Velma Madyibi, CEO of the Industrial Development Zone (corporate category); Agatha Pretorius, CEO of the Occupational Care SA (entrepreneurial category); and Renee Silverstone, CEO of Jupiter Drawing Room (entrepreneurial category).

Mokgosi-Mwantembe joined HP SA in 2004. Previously, she was CEO of Alcatel SA, divisional MD of Siemens Telecommunications and sales and marketing director of Lucent Technologies.

She has also won a number of awards, including the 2005 African ICT Achievers Award, Top ICT Business Woman in Africa category.

BWA president Basetsana Khumalo says the 2007 finalists represent a diversity of industries, illustrating yet again that women can excel in any given role, provided the barriers are removed.

The finalists will be judged tomorrow, says BWA in a media statement. Winners in the corporate business and entrepreneurial categories will be announced on 2 August at a gala banquet at the Sandton Convention Centre. Proceeds from the event will go towards the BWA Bursary Fund.
