HP, Cisco to deliver integrated network management solution

Johannesburg, 27 Oct 1998

Companies offer comprehensive enterprise management solution for Cisco environments

Simplifying the task of managing networks by using Web standards for interoperability and information exchange, Hewlett-Packard has announced the integration of its OpenView Network Node Manager 6.0 with the CiscoWorks2000 application set.

Gary de Menezes, the software business manager at Hewlett-Packard SA, is upbeat about the announcement, saying his company must promote joint vendor development when it makes sense.

"The two products are integrated at all levels through Cisco Management Connection, providing links from the hardware to the software. The functionality is delivered through a central console environment; this makes it far easier to manage the enterprise, up to and including application layers," he explains.

"IT administrators can use the OpenView component to correlate events from Cisco devices into root cause alarms, alleviating event storms. As a result of faster problem identification, networks experience increased uptime." CiscoWorks2000 will also integrate with HP OpenView AssetView, a software tool that allows users to identify and manage total cost of IT ownership information. "Through this integration, HP OpenView customers now have immediate access to an inventory of networking devices, PCs, servers and management processes in their Cisco environment," says de Menezes.

The two companies will provide enhanced security management options for Cisco environments through improved integration between HP OpenView NodeSentry and Cisco networking devices. The software compares network activity against known patterns of attack and facilitates a defensive response, delivering constant surveillance of networked applications to detect patterns of intrusion.

The product deliverables from these announcements are expected to be available in South Africa early next year; all will be available at no additional cost to customers.
