HP delivers compact 10/100 Switch at hub pricing

The HP ProCurve Switch 408 provides 10/100 connectivity for small networks or office-area expansion of large networks
Johannesburg, 11 Jun 1999

The new, HP ProCurve Switch 408, with eight 10/100Base-TX auto-sensing ports, is simple to use and requires no configuration, making it ideal for a variety of networking environments. For example, the switch can be used to network devices, such as PCs, servers or printers in a small to medium-sized business or for connecting the devices in a smaller network within a large enterprise.

"Over the past two years, we have witnessed fierce competition between the top networking vendors," said Ray Mota, managing director, Networking & Telecoms at Boston-based Aberdeen Group. "HP ProCurve Networking has made significant strides in achieving market awareness and market share by delivering quality, reliable solutions while breaking price barriers. The new HP ProCurve Switch 408 demonstrates HP products` exceptional price and performance combined with HP`s industry-leading warranty and support ."

"The HP ProCurve Switch 408 provides the ease of installation and performance that businesses demand at a price lower than other 10/100 switches," said Andrew Fletcher, HP networking and netservers product manager. "At an expected list price of R300 per port or less, users essentially get switching technology at hub prices. Combined with HP`s superior reliability and warranty, the HP ProCurve Switch 408 is an excellent LAN solution."

The HP ProCurve Switch 408

With eight 10/100Base-TX auto-sensing ports, the HP ProCurve Switch 408 easily adapts to existing network environments by automatically connecting each port at either Ethernet or Fast Ethernet speed. The switch delivers the performance advantage of switching technology with dedicated bandwidth to individual devices for maximum network utilisation. The half- and full-duplex capability doubles the throughput -- up to 200Mbps -- to each device. Also, the HP ProCurve Switch 408 includes IEEE 802.3x Flow Control, ensuring reliable communication during full-duplex operation.

Furthermore, the HP ProCurve Switch 408 is a simple-to-use, unmanaged device and requires no configuration. The comprehensive LED display enables the network administrator to easily view the network traffic and status of each port. Additionally, the MDI/MDI-X port allows it to cascade, just like a hub, making it easy to connect to other network devices.

The HP ProCurve Switch 408 also features fanless, quiet operation; is designed to fit into any office space; and meets Class B emissions standards for use in home and residential environments. With an available mounting kit, this compact switch can be installed on a variety of surfaces or even side-by-side in a standard 19-inch rack.

The HP ProCurve Switch 408 includes free end-user phone support, as well as a lifetime limited warranty for as long as the customer owns the product. In many parts of the world, HP also provides next-business-day advance product replacement at no additional cost.
