Hewlett-Packard Company has announced that it provided the first working demonstration of 1000Base-T technology at NetWorld+Interop which was held in Las Vegas on May 11 to 13. The demonstration, which was performed in conjunction with Broadcom, creator of the world`s first Gigabit Ethernet transceiver chip for existing copper cabling, displayed real data traffic (streamed video) passing through HP ProCurve switches at 1000Mbps per second over twisted-pair cabling.
HP also announced that it intends to develop products for the new 1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet technology.
Gigabit Ethernet is essential to supporting the growing numbers of bandwidth-hungry applications, mission-critical computing applications and increasingly faster computer systems. HP offers a full line of Gigabit Ethernet products, from components to switches to servers.
1000Base-T is a form of Gigabit Ethernet technology that has been designed to operate on up to 100 meters of a customer`s existing category 5 Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) cabling. This technology will use Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to provide low-cost, high-performance connectivity between switches, and to the desktop. By taking advantage of the vast installed base of category 5 UTP, 1000Base-T offers the opportunity to create a cost-effective solution utilizing Gigabit Ethernet technology by substantially reducing the cost of a network connection.
