data centre to running what it calls “sustainable data centre technologies,” says ZDNet.
In the south side of its facility, the HP Labs team is trying out everything from new sensors and data analytics to free air-side cooling techniques and microgrid technologies. The technologies being tested are part of the HP Labs Sustainable Data Centre Project. One of the keys is environmental sensors that measure everything from heat to humidity and other data.
The centre is split into two primary halls. All other things being equal, HP will be more closely able to monitor how specific architectural or technology changes to one side of the facility help that side perform in regard to the status quo.
“We will be able to judge the delta between the two data centres,” says Doug Oathout, VP for Green IT and Converged Infrastructure with HP.
It's a proving ground for answering the many 'what if' questions that have emerged as the industry seeks to push boundaries and test long-standing assumptions about data centre environments, according to Data Centre Knowledge.
The project will also provide HP the ability to demonstrate the effectiveness of new equipment and approaches to data centre efficiency - including HP's Converged Infrastructure architecture.
“This whole data centre is about creating sustainable data centre testing at scale, to help create the most efficient and sustainable facility possible,” says Oathut.
“We can adjust what work is being done where, and change air or temperature and humidity in different parts of the data centre. One of the leys to this data centre is that it's converged so we can move workloads around.”
