By the third quarter of this year operators of enterprise- and carrier-class IP networks will able to accurately define Quality of Service (QoS) policies and enforce them on all IP-based network devices.
That`s the word from the R&D teams at Hewlett-Packard and Hitachi, both of which are collaborating to develop a new version of HP OpenView PolicyXpert. The software is expected to enable network administrators to maintain the QoS and reliability of IP network services while reducing the cost of user and device management, even as the number of users and network devices grows.
"We are seeing an increase in the use of carrier- and ISP-provided IP networks where enterprise information and public communication system infrastructures are concerned," explains Gary de Menezes, software business manager for the Middle East and Africa at Hewlett-Packard.
"Such mission-critical applications require guaranteed QoS and highly reliable communication services. To meet these requirements, a policy server must provide the functionality for efficiently controlling the QoS of user traffic, for distributing the load generated from managing many network devices, and for managing the network devices."
The first version of HP OpenView PolicyXpert developed by the joint collaboration is scheduled to provide the following features:
functionality for linking routers to DiffServ communication services based on the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) standards;
functionality for linking multiple HP OpenView PolicyXpert servers for distributed control;
support for HP-UX and Solaris environments by fourth quarter.
"Since inception HP OpenView PolicyXpert has been designed to provide open, standards-based management of a heterogeneous environment - and to meet the scalability requirements of the large carrier and service provider environments," adds de Menezes.
"This collaboration with Hitachi allows the solution meet these requirements more rapidly and more completely. Naturally this creates a more compelling policy-based management paradigm for customers."
