HP provides backbone for high-end switches, Tarsus explains

A network is a network is a network. Not really... Hewlett-Packard has launched its latest switch range with the direct aim of increasing the value of network environments. HP`s Procurve switch range focuses on adaptability, speed, affordability and ease-of-use, and is available from Tarsus Technologies, the value-add distribution arm of JSE-listed MB Technologies.

"The adaptable Procurve switch series technology can be integrated to enhance networks across the spectrum - from the high-end backbone, to the wiring closet right through to the desktop. One of the main selling points of the Procurve range is the adaptability factor. The products feature a number of options that can be manipulated to better suit a specific type of network environment," says Drikus van der Walt, HP product manager at Tarsus Technologies.

The range features models from the 21, 23 and 25 series targeted at the desktop arena, the 4000m and 8000m specific to the wiring closet arena, as well as the 4108gl and 4108gl bundle as high-end backbone infrastructure.

Products within the 21, 23 and 25 series are marketed with the latest technology design from HP known as Switch-on-Chip technology. This HP-developed technology allows for data to be transferred through to a single chip which then processes the information, reads the coding, identifies the MAC address and sends the data through to the relevant recipient. Data transfer takes place at 9.6 gigabits per second and this technological development eliminates the traditional need for a control chip as part of the process.

As part of the 25 series, the 2524 and 2512 are managed switches allowing administrators to run simulation tests, pull status reports and evaluate the environment. A managed switch will also provide forewarning on a potential concern and allows

He continues: "HP`s patented Auto-MDIX feature allows easy migration from a hub, eliminating the need for cross-over cables."

The HP Procurve 4000m and 8000m switches, ideal for a 200+ user environment, are layer 2 modular or stackable cost-effective solutions for delivering dedicated 10/100 switching to the desktop with superior performance and media flexibility.

As additional support and a 36.6 gigabit per second backplane, the 4108gl and 4108gl bundle enables corporations and developing SME`s to enhance key network services like Internet, application servers, multimedia and telephony.

Up to 192 10/100 mbps ports with auto-detection is made available through these switches. The auto-detection feature identifies and segments bandwidth to specific areas

Van der Walt concludes: "Differential features include speed, performance, power, ease-of-management and security. HP has brought out technology that encourages adaptability with 8-slot modular chassis, multimedia support, Hot-swappable modules and optional redundant power supply."
