HP reveals casual capture concept

Tenerife, 30 Jun 2005

Almost everyone has regretted that a momentous event was "lost in time" because it was not captured in a picture, says HP.

However, the company has revealed it is in the advanced stages of developing technology that will improve the probability of always capturing momentous events.

Code-named "Casual Capture", the technology builds a sensor and lens into a pair of glasses connected to a small storage device that is placed in a pocket or attached to a belt.

The logic around this technology is that the sensor picks up on a person`s head movements, and captures images depending on how long the head stays stationary and what sort of movement is taking place in the foreground.

The device is able to capture both still and motion images, depending on the setting. "We have developed algorithms that detect head movements and decide on what is the best option to capture - still or motion picture," says HP`s Phil Cheatle, one of the developers of the device.

He explains that due to current limitations, the product only provides 1.5-megapixels in still images and records 30 frames per second in VGA camera quality.

"We are still in the advanced development stages with this product and are still analysing its value to the end-user. However, so far the response from the prototypes has been very good and as the price of processing and storage continues to drop, we should see it released in the near future with a very good price," explains Cheatle.

The company is also considering the option of having the product customisable to individual user behavioural patterns, but this will only be possible after further algorithm development.

The lens on the device is fixed focus, but HP is considering having an auto-focus option.
