HP SA has, according to the latest research from BMI-TechKnowledge (BMI-T), achieved 98.9% year-on-year unit growth across its PC and notebook ranges for the first quarter of 2006.
"HP`s share of the PC and notebook market grew from 13.2% to 19.3% over the past year," says research analyst at BMI-T, Hannes Fourie.
"These figures have been achieved in a quarter where the overall market grew at 33.8%," he adds.
HP`s nearest competitors in the desktop space are Mecer, Dell and Sahara - and Dell, Acer and Toshiba on the notebook side, notes Fourie.
Fourie is reluctant to reveal the exact market share of any of the other companies.
Paul Boshoff, HP`s personal systems group (PSG) country manager, attributes the good results largely to HP`s commitment to SA and to black economic empowerment (BEE).
"HP has an ongoing BEE policy aimed at enabling the company to become a leader in the BEE environment in SA - 70% of PSG`s desktop growth comes from HP`s advanced local configuration (ALC) through the company`s BEE manufacturing partner, Matomo Technologies."
Distributing a diverse range of computers and investment in skills development also contribute to the growth figures, he concludes.
