Hewlett-Packard Company, a leader in networking technologies, has announced it has surpassed Cabletron to become the fourth-largest worldwide vendor of Ethernet Layer 2 10/100 switch ports. According to a report issued by Dell`Oro Group, a Portola Valley, Calif.-based research firm, HP ProCurve Networking has secured the No. 4 position in port shipments in the third calendar quarter of 1999.
According to the report, HP continued to significantly outpace the market growth in Ethernet Layer 2 10/100 switches. HP grew at 383 percent vs. average market growth of 126 percent from third calendar quarter 1998 to third calendar quarter 1999.
IDC also posted Q3 market share results this week. In Europe, HP grew at 471% vs. average market growth of 181% for the same period of time. France and Finland even reached No.3 position over Nortel with 13% market share. Most other European countries also improved their market share positions. This growth was fueled by the continued success of HP ProCurve Switch 4000M, 8000M, 2424M, 1600M and 2224.
Because the Ethernet Layer 2 10/100 switch market is the largest revenue segment of the Ethernet LAN market, HP`s growth in this market is critical. Overall, Dell`Oro Group estimates that this segment will total $6.7 billion in 1999.
"HP has continued to surpass the market growth by providing customers with high-performance products at industry-leading prices," said Andrew Fletcher, HP Networking product manager. "Based on our recent performance, HP ProCurve Networking expects to grow at double the market average by maintaining our value proposition."
