Hewlett-Packard (HP) this week unveiled a series of updates to its Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) product portfolio that tackles challenges associated with building cloud applications, reports CRN.
ALM provides a central application management platform and workflow that speeds the application development process by keeping track of all its moving parts.
It's a technology of growing importance for companies that build and use cloud applications, which typically weave together multiple IT services to support business processes. HP released its ALM 11 suite last November and is now updating the suite with new features and functionality.
Application Lifecycle Intelligence is another new module that works with ALM 11, states InformationWeek.
ALM 11 gathers information on lines of code written, the number of tests executed against the code, and the defect rate encountered from a wide variety of development tools and integrated development environments, says Raffi Margaliot, HP's senior director of products.
Heeding the needs of 'agile' programming devotees, HP has augmented its ALM suite to allow application development managers to use an emerging development methodology called Kanban, according to PC World.
“Kanban is basically keeping everything on sticky notes. We can actually do that in the graphical user interface,” said Kelly Emo, who runs the HP product marketing team for ALM.
“In ALM, you see the yellow stickies, and you click on them and all the information - the user story, the outstanding defects, the code - is exposed for you.”
The Kanban interface is one of a number of enhancements to its ALM suite that HP released on Tuesday, all in support of speeding the development time of applications. Thanks to Google and Facebook, “business users are expecting to not have to wait six or nine months for new capabilities,” Emo said.
