Hype Cycles help businesses determine when to invest in new technologies

Gartner launches interactive Hype Cycles that assess the maturity of more than 500 technologies over the next five years
Johannesburg, 11 Jun 2003

Each day businesses are bombarded by new technologies and promises from vendors that tout technological solutions. To help businesses decide when to adopt a new technology or when to hold off, Gartner has analysed the maturity of more than 500 technologies and has released the findings in a series of interactive Hype Cycles.

Gartner Hype Cycles characterise the over enthusiasm, or hype, and subsequent disappointment that typically happens with the introduction of new technologies. The Hype Cycles also show how and when technologies move beyond the hype, offer practical benefits and become widely accepted.

"Hype Cycles help technology planners understand why they should not invest in certain technologies just because the technologies are being hyped, or should not ignore some technologies because they are not living up to early over expectations created by vendors and media," said Alexander Linden, research vice-president for Gartner. "Hype Cycles allow technology planners to compare their understanding of technologies` evolution against Gartner`s analysis of the technologies` maturity."

Gartner Hype Cycles were originally launched in 1995, but are now updated and expanded to include 500 technologies and support interactive use. They are being released in three sections. The first section is focused on technologies and is available now. It consists of 17 separate Hype Cycles, including data warehousing, information security, mobile and wireless applications and services, open source technologies, storage, Web services, and XML technologies. The final two sections -- applications, and verticals and geographies -- will be launched later in June.

Each Hype Cycle document focuses on a particular segment and can include more than 15 related technologies. The interactive format of the Hype Cycles allows users to dig deeper into particular technologies of interest by clicking through the Hype Cycle documents to related Gartner research on the individual technology.
