Hyperion enhancements drive ease of use, data integration and scalability

Johannesburg, 22 Jan 2002

Business intelligence software provider Hyperion has introduced enhancements to its analytical platform geared to drive ease of use, data integration and scalability. Hyperion is distributed in SA and neighbouring states by Global Technology Business Intelligence (GBI), a division of JSE Securities Exchange-listed Global Technology.

Its analytical platform is the foundation for a comprehensive business intelligence solution that addresses the alignment gaps caused by disparate departmental business intelligence applications in an organisation. Hyperion Essbase is deployed in a wide variety of environments, from the financial, transportation, energy and defence industries to operational analytics in the high-tech, restaurant, automotive and retail sectors.

"The new enhancements advance Hyperion`s strategy to create and deliver enterprise-wide business intelligence solutions that enable companies to measure performance and drive profitability," says Johan Cloete, CEO of GBI.

"There is a growing customer appetite for business intelligence solutions that are able to distribute advanced analytical information, derived from multiple data sources, to constantly increasing numbers of users, across the enterprise and beyond," he says.

Industry analyst Gartner recently confirmed the importance of an analytical platform that enables companies to elevate business intelligence to a strategic enterprise-wide initiative. In the current economic climate companies are looking more broadly across the enterprise to find ways to improve performance and drive profitability. Gartner maintains those that implement a comprehensive, unified business intelligence framework that aligns business intelligence initiatives should experience a return on investment and integration two to three times greater than those that do not.

The new features built into Hyperion Essbase 6.2 and Hyperion Application Builder 2.0 enable customers and business partners to rapidly build scalable analytic applications that leverage disparate data sources, deploying them more reliably to meet the needs of end-users for critical business information throughout the enterprise.

Essbase`s new features include:

* A data source integration console that speeds the analysis process by automating the transfer of relevant data from multiple sources - such as ERP, CRM, SCM and data warehouses;

* Advanced administration functions for improved ease of use and control over its environment;

* Optimisation for high numbers of concurrent users and queries, which removes any single point of failure and increases reliability; and

* New server functionality in support of powerful analytics for fast analysis, planning, modelling and report generation; more efficient data loading on multiprocessor systems; increased data volume scalability and improved memory utilisation, Java-based Application Builder 2.0, a tool that provides developers with the ability to build powerful custom analytic applications, features new functionality for rapid creation of Web-centric, cross-platform applications that leverage data from Essbase and other data sources. Its latest features include:

* New Web application architecture based on the model-view-controller pattern, to enable robust application development;

* Enhanced sample Web application and additional source code components, offering rapid application development;

* Support for access to relational data via Java database connectivity (JDBC) and through a Star Schema that treats the relational data like online analytical processing (OLAP);

* A relational domain component to facilitate SQL drill-through from OLAP cube to the relational database; and

* Support for Linux.

"The enhancements provide superior support for high numbers of concurrent users and simplify custom application development. Combined with Hyperion`s suite of tools for reporting, analysis, modelling and planning, they give our customers and partners a complete analytical platform enabling them to reduce the time and cost of building, deploying, and maintaining sophisticated analytical applications," says Cloete.
