Iafrica.com gets personal with portals

In a move designed to offer an added value online experience to its subscription base, iafrica.com has launched a comprehensive suite of communication and collaboration applications that target the local online user.

Originally conceived in 1999 the new allows the company to learn more about its audience, and therefore offer a more personalised experience. The new site will now see additional support as back office development is intensified to enable any new services.

To date, interested surfers can sign up for a free personalised e-mail account coupled with an on-line calendar and scheduling facilities housed on an IBM AS/400 server running the Lotus Domino platform. Tim Spira, iafrica.com`s business development manager, says that with phase one of the `myiafrica.com.com` project being complete, the service provider is looking at offering a more personalised experience for its users. "The primary objective has been to provide applications that make our users` lives a little easier. The success we have enjoyed with myiafrica.com to date suggests that calendaring and free e-mail are extremely popular applications. Tailored content is also quite important to us," he says. "The plan is to start including a greater depth of customised content into these applications."

Running on an IBM AS/400 server, the Lotus Domino software platform is responsible for keeping the site up to date and easy to use. "As it was originally designed for corporate use, Domino is both a robust and secure application, making it a tough nut to crack and thereby ensuring registered users have a safe online experience," says Lesego Tlhabanelo, marketing communications manager at Lotus Development SA.

"We see our current offering as a platform for further development, not a final product," Spira says.
