IBM announces price reductions

Johannesburg, 11 Feb 1999

IBM has announced price reductions across the entire range of its locally available products. This follows close on the heels of the Compaq reductions on Friday. "We said we intend to keep our pricing competitive and we will," says an IBM marketer.

Distributor First Technology says the reductions will be filtered down to dealers by the end of the week. First Technology Distribution is the result of the merger last year between Epsidon Distribution and Hi-Technology Supply, and the company now focuses on IBM and FujiTech products.

Siltek and Tarsus, the other two IBM distributors, also confirmed the new pricing. "These prices will hit the streets by tomorrow," a spokesperson for Tarsus says.

IBM has also revealed its strategy to increase market share to its business partners. This includes better customer service, pricing and increasing awareness of new products.

An eight-way server will be launched as soon as the Intel chipset is available to the market.
