IBM has deployed Dr Robert Mayberry, one of its senior executives, to SA to lead emerging markets and sub-Saharan Africa.
The new GM and VP will be based in Johannesburg. Mayberry will be responsible for designing and executing IBM`s strategy for expanding into new markets in the region.
The announcement came as IBM revealed it would spend a further R820 million on the sub-Saharan region in a variety of economy-building initiatives.
Says Mayberry: "Africa is an increasingly attractive investment environment for global companies such as IBM. We are committed to being part of Africa`s economic transformation into a major player in the global marketplace."
IBM SA communications executive Mathula Mphande says Mayberry`s appointment will not impact on the functions of South and Central Africa MD, Mark Harris.
Mayberry holds a PhD in computer science and has experience across various industry sectors. He has a long history with IBM`s various businesses, having managed strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions, software engineering for application development, as well as intelligent devices and wireless networks.
