IBM IntelliStation Z Pro leaps to 64-bit architecture, says Tarsus

Johannesburg, 05 Nov 2001

The IBMIntelliStation Z Pro with IntelItanium processors crosses the digital divide and enters the next dimension of technical computing with 64-bit arhitecture, says Tarsus Technologies, a member of JSE-listed MB Technologies.

"With more bandwidth and functionality to create, visualise and analyse complex projects, these 64-bit IntelliStation workstations are invested with deep scalability to meet the evolving demands of the data-dense applications," says Warren Small, IBM product manager at Tarsus Technologies. "The IntelliStation is ideal for engineering, media correction, financial and scientific analysis."

The Intel Itanium Processor features an all new topography based on Intel`s Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC) technology with up to 20 operations per clock. "Innovations such as three levels of cache for reduced latency, machine check architecture that contains and fixes errors, and enhanced floating point performance, complement IBM`s continuous leadership in 64-bit computing," Small continues.

Powered by dual Intel Itanium processors running at 800MHz with 2MB of L3 cache, this new class of IntelliStation broadens the data pipeline with a 2 x 133MHz bus, delivering an outstanding 2.1GBps bandwidth for system bus transactions.

Addressable memory is expandable up to 16GB ECC SDRAM, enabling the memorisation of much bigger data sets. The mid-tower case has generous room for customisation with nine bays, eight slots (five 64-bit/66MHz PCI, two 64-bit/33MHz, one 4xAGP) and a massive 800w power supply.

Small points out that Linux and Microsoft are bringing 64-bit operating systems to the market to harness the power of the Itanium-based IntelliStation workstations. "On the Linux front, Red Hat`s distribution of 64-bit Linux is scheduled to be available at the same time as the Z Pro, while Microsoft has announced Windows XP 64-bit edition."

Small concludes: "The IntelliStation Z Pro includes a three-year limited warranty on parts and onsite labour, along with free technical support during the warranty period. Personalised online advice from `Ask IntelliStation`, the IBM team of service engineers dedicated to application performance, is also included."
