IBM offers business software for Linux

Johannesburg, 05 Sep 2006

Lotus Notes version 7, a client-server collaborative software and e-mail system developed by IBM, is now available on the Linux open source platform.

At an IBM conference highlighting the latest release of its instant messaging platform Sametime (version 7.5), in Sandton, yesterday, local and visiting executives demonstrated the applications of Lotus Notes.

"The flexibility of the Linux desktop, combined with widespread availability of server software running on Linux, has increased demand for desktop applications such as Lotus Notes," said Oscar Rozario, solutions sales manager, IBM Software Group.

He added that IBM would now deliver business-grade e-mail and group scheduling on Linux, as well as the opportunity for customers to take Lotus Notes applications and run them on a Linux desktop for the first time.

Rozario believes offering Lotus Notes on Linux is a significant development for small and medium enterprises.

"Since many small businesses and start-ups have the opportunity to start fresh without incumbent infrastructures in place, the Linux environment is an appealing option from a flexibility and cost standpoint."

IBM Lotus Notes on Linux is available as part of version 7 and supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, Update 3. Lotus Notes licensed users can run existing licences on a Linux desktop, he added.
