IBM to help customers move to Linux
IBM will give away software to help customers adapt software written for Sun Microsystems` Solaris operating system to its open source rival Linux, reports ZDNet.
The Migration Kit helps people to assess software written in C or C++ programming languages and move it from Solaris to Linux.
Mozilla Firefox 1.5 released
After many rounds of beta candidates, the open source Firefox 1.5 browser has been released for download, reports Eweek.com.
Version 1.5 offers performance gains, usability enhancements and support for new Web graphics standards through an updated version of the Gecko layout engine.
The update also offers a new "safe mode" for enhanced protection against potential threats and automated checks for security updates.
eBay traffic leads online shopping sites
Online auction site eBay had double the traffic of Amazon.com, its closest competitor among US Web retail sites, at the start of the holiday online shopping season, reports Reuters.
Nielsen//NetRatings, which tracks traffic to more than 100 retail Web sites, said eBay had 11.7 million unique visitors and Amazon 5.6 million on "Cyber Monday". This is when Internet shopping gets a boost as Americans return to work after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and follows "Black Friday", the traditional start to the shopping season in stores.
Wal-Mart Stores was third with 3.1 million, Target fourth with 2.2 million, Overstock.com fifth at 1.93 million and Dell sixth with 1.88 million.
Nokia unveils smartphone
Nokia has unveiled a high-end smartphone, the Nokia 9300i, reports Techtree.com.
The handset features WLAN connectivity with full keyboard, 65 536-colour screen, support for a wide range of e-mail solutions and an attachment viewer.
Nokia 9300i`s memory capacity of 80MB is expandable up to 2GB. It supports E-GPRS (EDGE) and WLAN 802.11g; multiple e-mail clients, including BlackBerry Connect, Nokia Business Center, IBM WebSphere, Oracle Collaboration Suite, Seven Always-On Mail and Visto Mobile; and five-party conference calling via an integrated speakerphone.
