IBM unveils cloud storage
IBM has released an enterprise network attached storage (NAS) array that can scale up to 14 petabytes, reports SFGate.
IBM says the Sonas system can offer enterprises access to billions of files in support of cloud computing architectures.
Terri McClure, Enterprise Strategy Group analyst, notes there has been continued interest in commodity-based scale-out platforms in the data centre driven by the long-term aftershocks of the economic slowdown.
PS3 gets 3D, storage boost
Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 3 will get stereoscopic 3D technology as well as holding 1TB of storage, says Tech Tree.
Sony is pushing for 3D display technology with its Bravia 3D TVs and will be rolling out a PlayStation 3 update that enables viewers to play 3D games and watch 3D Blu-Ray movies.
PlayStation 3 Slim's design is capable of holding up to 1TB of storage since it's been made more accessible for users.
California deploys smart energy storage
The Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA) has partnered with Ice Energy to create utility-scale distributed energy storage project that will deliver power stored in blocks of ice, states Smart Planet.
The 53-megawatt project will permanently reduce California's peak electrical demand by shifting as much as 64 gigawatt hours of on-peak electrical consumption to off-peak periods every year.
Bill Carnahan, executive director of SCPPA, says: “By using storage to change how - and more importantly when - energy is consumed by air conditioning, we can offset enough peak demand in the region to serve the equivalent of 10 000 homes.”
