IBM SA has introduced to the South African market the new version of IBM`s leading-edge messaging and collaboration solution, Lotus Notes and Domino 6, aimed at improving productivity and reducing overall cost of ownership.
The new version has more than a thousand new and enhanced features.
Says IBM SA`s Lotus sales manager, Grant Somerset: "The new version`s advanced cost reducing capabilities are a direct result of being more tightly integrated into the rest of the IBM software portfolio, as well as providing greater support for Microsoft`s Active Directory.
"This enables customers to easily blend the new version into their current infrastructure - maximising their business benefits and protecting their current IT investment.
"In addition, as all of IBM`s software pillars - WebSphere (middleware), DB2 (database management), Tivoli (systems management) and Lotus - continue to be developed together, so their collective integrative abilities will outstrip anything other vendors have to offer.
"Which means that not only our huge local Lotus installed base but also new customers will always have the best available messaging and collaboration facilities - at the lowest total cost of ownership."
New cost-management features in Lotus Notes and Domino 6 include innovative technology that helps consolidate server hardware, reduce disk space use and minimise network traffic.
New policy-based administration and client-upgrade automation tools lower administration costs, while improved inbox management and advanced calendar and scheduling functionality save time and increase end-user productivity.
New information control features like improved mail archiving, mail journaling and spam control, increase worker productivity and conserve IT resources.
Support for open standards initiatives such as J2EE, Linux and XML gives customers long-term security and flexibility.
Productivity enhancements for end-users include simplified user interface and virtual elimination of end-user configuration requirements.
Toolbars, new templates and dialog boxes improve ease of use for Microsoft Office users.
Mobility and wireless access has been improved via supported PDAs, pagers and WAP-enabled mobile phones.
Heightened reliability, scalability, performance and security have improved cost-effectiveness for administrators - through improved transaction logging, clustering, network compression, replication and increased support of security standards.
For application developers, power and flexibility have been improved through code checkout and code sharing technologies for team development.
The time needed to build and deploy multi-platform, mission critical applications has been reduced and the ability provided to build applications that are open, secure, and Web-enabled with multi-platform support and workflow - all with easy-to-upgrade capabilities.
Lotus Notes and Domino 6 incorporate feedback from thousands of business partners and customers - ranging from small businesses to Global 2000 organisations - who have participated for more than a year in early deployment and beta programs.
The Lotus Notes and Domino 6 product family - which includes Lotus Notes and Domino 6, Lotus Domino Designer 6, Lotus iNotes Web Access 6, Lotus iNotes Access 6 for Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Enterprise Integrator 6 and Domino Everyplace - is now generally available for download.
