IBM`s new WAN offering delivers superior networking capabilities

IBM has announced a new release of the IBM 2220 Nways Broadband Switch that will allow customers to consolidate, improve efficiency and reduce costs for running their wide area networks.

IBM`s 2220 Nways Broadband Switch for Asynchronous Transfer Mode and Frame Relay WANs is a high performance platform designed to meet the networking demands of customers with multi-service networks. It integrates voice, realtime and multimedia applications over wide area networks while providing cost savings and Quality of Service (QoS) benefits. These enhancements provide seamless interoperability across remote LAN-to-LAN multi-vendor networks.

The new release of the 2220 will enable companies to reduce overall networking costs by leveraging ATM and Frame Relay only when required. Additionally, the new release provides adapter consolidation and simplified performance monitoring for a cost effective and easy-to-manage WAN environment.

IBM`s 2220 Nways Broadband Switch Improves WAN connectivity

ATM and Frame Relay enhancements to IBM`s 2220 Nways Broadband switch include:

Network and Service Interworking transparently interconnects Frame Relay devices through a standard ATM networking to another Frame Relay attached device or an ATM server, leveraging the network for conversion support. This reduces the overall network costs by migrating locations to ATM and Frame Relay as required to meet application needs

Support for ATM Switched Virtual Circuit (SVC) utilises dynamic ATM route selection for ATM switched virtual connections, thereby increasing connectivity of large ATM network configurations to protect user flexibility, reduced management overhead and ease-of-use in establishing connections.

Enhanced Video Support connects video devices efficiently to optimise network bandwidth utilisation, which reduces network operating costs.

Enhancements to the 2220`s network management capabilities and adapter consolidation offering include:

Protocol Merge for X.25 reduces the cost of supporting multiple protocols by optimising adapter use and reducing the number of adapters needed. Trunk and Control Point in the ATM adapter trunk and control point functions can coexist on the same ATM adapter, reducing the number of ATM adapters and delivering additional cost savings.

Nways 2220 Switch Manager for AIX Version 1.1 simplifies operation and adds new support, including new trunk bandwidth efficiency monitoring that assists the user in verifying that their network design and implementation match their traffic constraints.
