The Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the South African Maritime Safety Association (SAMSA).
SAMSA will review all previously accredited training institutions and re-accredit as required.
It will revise the relevant Marine Operator's certification as per International Telecommunications Union regulations.
The authority also says SAMSA will set the requirements necessary for individuals to obtain approval as Designated Examiners for the written and practical examining of candidates for issuance of Long and Short Range (Non-SOLAS) Radio Operator Certificates, GMDSS (GOC), and first and second class Radio Electronic Certificates.
The Authority is of the view that this MoU will go a long way in strengthening the relations between the parties and in ensuring there is seamless certification of Marine Radio Operators, among others.
The MoU became effective from this month, and therefore replaces the one signed in May 2006.
