In its 2006 annual report, the Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) reveals how many complaints it received, and which telecoms operators proved to be the most unpopular.

Out of a total of 708 complaints received by the authority during the 2005/06 financial year, 422 (or 60%) were against Telkom. Vodacom followed with 11% of complaints, then Cell C (10%) and MTN (7%). Some 4% of complaints were lodged against all the operators combined, and 9% against "others".

The main categories of complaints included ADSL pricing (218 complaints), Telkom faults (88), Telkom installation (64), and cellular contracts (48).

"During this financial year, the authority experienced an increase in complaints related to Telkom`s fault reports... Telkom`s inability to meet needs for service installation and/or lines transfer within a specific time, and Telkom`s new pricing methods on ADSL," says the regulator in the report.

Almost three-quarters of complaints to ICASA came from Gauteng, with no more than 6% emerging from any other province, adds the report.
