The International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) has opened a second office in SA because of an "unprecedented growth in demand" for its services in the country and the rest of Africa.
The office, in Rosettenville, in the south of Johannesburg, will compliment the non-profit computer literacy organisation`s Cape Town operation.
ICDL Africa CE Jennifer van Niekerk says her organisation has grown phenomenally over the past year.
The Johannesburg office will be co-located with the Papillon Foundation that has been an ICDL centre since 2006.
"In addition, we have partnered with well over 10 African countries to deliver ICDL certification to either civil servants or education authorities or both in these countries and this is why we are now requiring a base in Gauteng to enable us to deliver a professional and timeous service to our growing client base," said van Niekerk.
ICDL programmes are now a compulsory course for both learners and teachers in the school systems of two provinces, while the University of SA has made the ICDL either compulsory or a module of choice in science degrees, as well as a number of other degrees and diplomas.
The Western Cape Education Department has enrolled 100 of their Education Management and Development Centre (EDMC) staff in the programme, while the Department of Communications has sponsored 2 000 unemployed candidates to participate in the programme through Further Education and Training Colleges.
The ICDL programme has also been run in two Cape prisons as part of the rehabilitation of inmates.
ICDL certification is available in 150 countries globally and has been translated into 38 languages.
It is an internationally recognised global standard in end-user computer skills.
